Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
