Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
